In 2006, Mayor Whitaker asked the Fairbanks Economic Development Corporation to convene an Interior Issues Council to address a number of issues of local importance. Among these was the Cost of Energy. The initial findings of the Cost of Energy task force indicated the single most important thing we could do as individuals and as a community was to conserve energy; the cheapest unit of energy is the one you do not use.
In August of 2007, the task force re-convened and developed a business plan covering not only the different sources of energy available to us locally, but also the role energy conservation and efficiency play in the cost of energy, no matter what the source.
During discussions it was determined we needed to educate people in the interior as to the costs of energy, show them both the economic and environment importance of doing something about it, and most important, show them what options are available, how to go about implementing them, and the economic benefits of doing so.
This blog has been created to share with the residents of the Interior Alaska the knowledge accumulated over many years pertaining to energy conservation and efficiency. Energy costs are ever increasing. Waiting for the next technology of government intervention may take years, may even be futile. In contrast, energy conservation and efficiency technology has developed to a high level, and most of it is right off the shelf, easily available, and the costs of utilizing these ideas is, in most cases, repaid quickly by the savings realized. Here you will find information about what you can do, on your own or with help, in your daily lives, in your home, to curb your cost of energy. And, you can do it starting today, and start saving tomorrow.
